NZeTA for US Travelers: Validity, Fees, IVL & How to Apply

Short answer: The United States of America (including USA nationals) is on Immigration New Zealand’s visa-waiver list. For short visits you typically request an NZeTA before travel (not a Visitor Visa first). INZ states an NZeTA is valid for 2 years for travellers, allows multiple trips, and supports visits of up to 3 months at a time (6 months for UK passport holders), with a cap of 6 months in any 12-month period. Allow 72 hours for processing. Request fees start from NZD $17 (INZ notes the app is cheaper). Most NZeTAs also include the International Visitor Levy (IVL) of NZD $100, which INZ generally does not refund if declined — confirm your total on the INZ fee tool. Start NZeTA help on my-evisas.com. What is an NZeTA?

A New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) lets eligible travellers travel to New Zealand without a visa first (INZ). For most U.S. short tourism trips it is the main sellable electronic product on my-evisas.com. On arrival, with entry permission, INZ may give you a visitor visa at the border. Binding eligibility and checkout totals are those published by Immigration New Zealand — confirm on the live official channel before you pay.

Official apply channel

INZ says you should use the official NZeTA website or mobile app to request an NZeTA.

Assisted filing through my-evisas.com supports the electronic NZeTA path. Confirm the live official channel before you enter payment details.

Validity, stay, funds and passport

From the INZ NZeTA page (accessed 29 July 2026):

  • Validity: 2 years for travellers (5 years for airline crew); multi-entry while valid.
  • Stay per visit: up to 3 months at a time, or up to 6 months if travelling on a United Kingdom passport.
  • 12-month cap: you can only be in New Zealand for up to 6 months within any 12-month period (counting back from your intended departure date).
  • Transit: up to 24 hours through Auckland International Airport, staying in the transit area.
  • Funds: at least NZD $1,000 a month, or NZD $400 a month if you have already paid for accommodation.
  • Passport: must be valid for at least 3 months after the date you intend to leave New Zealand; request the NZeTA with the same passport you will use to travel.
  • Processing: allow 72 hours (checks may take longer if INZ needs more information).

Fees and the International Visitor Levy (IVL)

  • NZeTA request fee: INZ shows from NZD $17. INZ states the NZeTA app is cheaper than the online form for the request fee. Confirm the live amount when you apply.
  • IVL: INZ states many tourists must pay an International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) of NZD $100. It is charged for most NZeTAs. You pay the IVL when you request an NZeTA (when it applies).
  • Refunds: INZ states it does not refund the IVL, even if the application is declined.
  • Transit: INZ lists transit passengers arriving at and leaving from Auckland International Airport among those who do not pay an IVL. Confirm your case with INZ’s Fees, decision times and where to apply tool before you pay.
  • Agency service fees (if you use assisted filing) are separate from government fees.

How to apply — overview

  1. Confirm you are on a visa-waiver path (USA is listed) and that NZeTA fits your trip — or compare NZeTA vs Visitor Visa.
  2. Request via the official website (nzeta.immigration.govt.nz) or the official NZeTA app, or use assisted electronic filing via https://my-evisas.com/visas/new-zealand.
  3. Allow 72 hours for processing; keep your NZeTA confirmation email for check-in.
  4. Before entry, complete the NZTD (separate form) — see NZTD.

NZTD is not your NZeTA

INZ states that everyone entering New Zealand must complete a New Zealand Traveller Declaration (NZTD). It collects travel, customs, immigration, and biosecurity information. Having an NZeTA does not replace NZTD. Details: New Zealand Traveller Declaration.

Prefer a Visitor Visa instead?

If you plan to stay longer than the NZeTA visit caps, need a sponsor, or are unsure you meet character requirements, INZ says you should apply for a visa and have it before you travel. Compare: NZeTA vs Visitor Visa. Visitor Visa lodgement is DIY only on my-evisas.com.
