What is a Sri Lanka ETA?
A Sri Lanka ETA is an Electronic Travel Authorization granted online through the Department of Immigration & Emigration (DI&E) system. Official pages often label the tourist product as a “tourist visa (ETA)” — that still means the electronic short-visit path, not a sticker visa stamped at a consulate.
ETA covers short visits for Tourism, Business, and Transit. The issuing authority is the Department of Immigration & Emigration in Baththaramulla, Sri Lanka.
Do US citizens need a Sri Lanka ETA?
Yes — before you arrive. DI&E states that foreign nationals — including nationals of the free-scheme countries — must obtain an ETA prior to arrival. Being on the free-fee list does not mean you can skip the application.
Cost — free tourist ETA for US nationals (from 25 May 2026)
With effect from 25 May 2026, nationals of 40 countries, including the United States of America, are eligible to obtain a tourist visa (ETA) free of charge for a period of 30 days.
If you paid an ETA fee before that date, DI&E notes those fees are non-refundable. For nationalities that still pay, use the fee table on the official ETA site — amounts change; confirm there before paying.

Validity, stay length, and double entry
Under the free scheme for eligible nationalities:
- Stay: free tourist ETA valid for 30 days, with double-entry permitted from the date of first arrival within that 30-day period
- Longer stay: if you already hold a free tourist ETA and wish to remain beyond 30 days, apply for a visa extension and pay the applicable fee (DIY — not via my-evisas.com)
Separately, DI&E FAQ states an ETA is valid for six months (travel-authorization window on that passport), and you generally cannot obtain a fresh ETA on the same passport until it expires (lost-passport exception with a new fee). Treat the 30-day stay and the six-month ETA window as different concepts.
