Sri Lanka ETA for US Travelers: Who Needs It, How to Apply & Official Channel
Short answer: Holders of a valid United States of America passport need a Sri Lanka Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before arrival. From 25 May 2026, the United States of America is on Sri Lankaโs list of 40 countries that may receive a free-of-charge 30-day tourist ETA โ but you must still apply and obtain approval before you travel. Request it through the official portal at eta.gov.lk. You can stay up to 30 days with double-entry from your first arrival. Start Sri Lanka ETA help on my-evisas.com. Stand: 18 August 2026.

What is the Sri Lanka ETA?
The Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is Sri Lankaโs electronic entry permit for short visits โ including holiday travel, short business trips, and transit through the country.
An approved tourist ETA under the current free scheme lets eligible visitors stay up to 30 days, with double-entry permitted from the date of your first arrival within that validity period.
This is not visa-free travel: you need an approved ETA before you arrive, even when no processing fee applies.
Official apply channel
The official apply channel is eta.gov.lk, operated by the Department of Immigration & Emigration (DI&E) of Sri Lanka.
Apply online before departure. The official site also describes limited alternatives โ including application through a Sri Lanka Overseas Mission or at the port of entry โ but prior online approval is the standard path most US travelers should plan around.
Who can apply โ US citizens
From 25 May 2026, nationals of 40 selected countries โ including the United States of America โ may obtain a tourist visa (ETA) free-of-charge for 30 days.
Nationals holding Diplomatic, Official, Service, or Ordinary US passports are eligible under this scheme.
All foreign nationals, including those on the 40-country list, must still obtain an ETA prior to arrival.
How long you can stay
Under the free tourist ETA scheme, you are entitled to a 30-day stay with double-entry from the date of your first arrival in Sri Lanka within the validity period.
If you wish to remain beyond 30 days, you may apply for a visa extension and pay the applicable visa fee through official immigration channels.
Passport and documents
When you apply, use the same passport you will travel with and enter details exactly as they appear in that document.
Official guidance advises keeping a copy of your ETA approval to produce at the point of entry in Sri Lanka.
Confirm live document rules on eta.gov.lk before you apply.
ETA fee and free scheme โ what to expect
From 25 May 2026, United States of America passport holders on the 40-country list may receive a tourist ETA processed free of charge โ but free-of-charge does not mean free of formalities. You must still complete the online application and receive approval before travel.
ETA fees paid before 25 May 2026 are non-refundable, per the Department of Immigration & Emigration.
Nationals not on the free scheme (and countries outside the listed bilateral arrangements) remain subject to the standard ETA fee rules on the official portal.
For the choice between online ETA before you fly and ETA at the airport counter, see ETA vs visa on arrival.
How to apply โ overview
- Confirm your US passport and travel purpose fit the tourist ETA rules on eta.gov.lk.
- Complete the online ETA application on the official portal before departure.
- Pay any fee that applies to your nationality and application date (US travelers on the 40-country scheme from 25 May 2026: free processing when eligible).
- Wait for approval and save your ETA approval notice for check-in and entry.
- Present your passport and approval at Sri Lankan immigration on arrival.
Apply early enough that you are not boarding without an approved ETA. A limited ETA facility at Bandaranaike International Airport exists for travellers without prior approval, but additional fees apply โ see the comparison guide linked above.
If your ETA is not approved
If your ETA application is not approved, review the reason on the official channel, correct any errors, and reapply if the system allows.
For complex cases โ for example when official rules require sponsor-based processing for certain nationalities โ contact the Department of Immigration & Emigration or a Sri Lanka Overseas Mission through official channels.
Fees paid before 25 May 2026 are non-refundable even if an application is unsuccessful.
At the border, immigration officers make the final entry decision even when you hold an approved ETA.
FAQ
Do US citizens need an ETA for Sri Lanka?
Yes. United States of America passport holders must obtain an approved ETA before arrival, including under the free tourist ETA scheme from 25 May 2026.
Is Sri Lanka visa-free for US citizens?
No. Even when the ETA processing fee is waived, you must apply for and receive an ETA before travel. That is electronic authorization, not visa-free entry.
How much does a Sri Lanka ETA cost for Americans?
From 25 May 2026, eligible US tourists on the 40-country list may receive a free-of-charge 30-day tourist ETA when processed under the official scheme. Confirm eligibility and any edge-case fees on eta.gov.lk at checkout. Fees paid before 25 May 2026 are not refunded.
How long does Sri Lanka ETA processing take?
Official sources do not publish a guaranteed minutes-or-hours SLA. Apply before you travel, keep your approval copy, and do not assume same-day approval at the airport counter unless you accept additional fees and entry-day procedures described on the official apply page.
What if my Sri Lanka ETA is refused or not approved?
Review the official response, fix application errors if possible, and reapply or seek guidance from DI&E or a Sri Lanka Overseas Mission. Pre-25 May 2026 fees are non-refundable. Border officers decide final admission.
Is the Sri Lanka ETA the same as visa on arrival?
Sri Lankaโs system is ETA-based. Search results often say โvisa on arrival,โ but the official path is electronic authorization โ usually online before you fly. An airport ETA counter at BIA exists with extra fees. See ETA vs visa on arrival.
Can I extend my stay beyond 30 days?
You may apply for an official visa extension beyond 30 days and pay the applicable fee through immigration channels. Extensions are DIY on official rules, not sold through my-evisas.com.
