Short answer
- Most US visitors need an approved ETA before arrival. From 25 May 2026, eligible US tourists may receive a free 30-day tourist ETA, but that still means requesting it before travel — it is not visa-free entry on the day.
- Holiday visits, short business trips, and transit through Sri Lanka all require an ETA prior to arrival.
- Under the free tourist scheme, the ETA is valid for 30 days with double entry from the date of first arrival; a second entry only receives the balance of those 30 days.

Decision help — which Sri Lanka entry path?
If you are choosing between guides, start from the purpose of this trip. A US traveler flying to Colombo for a two-week holiday, stopping for a short business meeting, or only changing planes still needs an ETA before arrival. The free tourist scheme changes the cost for eligible US tourists; it does not remove the need to request authorization in advance.
That same holiday traveler who plans two separate arrivals within one trip also needs to watch the clock: the free tourist ETA allows double entry from the first arrival, but the second entry only uses whatever days remain of the original 30-day period. Leaving and returning does not reset a fresh 30 days.

Do US citizens need a visa for Sri Lanka?

Is Sri Lanka visa-free for US citizens?
No. From 25 May 2026, eligible US tourists may receive a free 30-day tourist ETA, but they still have to request that ETA before arrival. Free of charge is not the same as arriving without prior authorization.
Does the free tourist ETA still have to be requested before travel?
Yes. Eligible US tourists under the 40-country scheme receive a tourist ETA free of charge, valid for 30 days with double entry — and it must still be obtained before you arrive.
Transit through Colombo — do US travelers need an ETA?
