Choose an e-Visa when you want a decision before departure
Advance filing fits a US traveler who can apply ahead and wants the result before flying. The Egypt e-Visa Portal says nationals of listed countries, including the United States of America, may be issued an e-Visa. You have to create the application at least seven days before departure. An e-Visa is an official document permitting entry into and travel from Egypt. Applicants obtain it electronically after entering the required information and paying by credit or debit card, and a link to download the e-Visa is sent by email. A place on the nationality list is permission to apply. It is not an approval, and an issued e-Visa does not guarantee entry. Egyptian port authorities may refuse entry to an e-Visa holder.
For arrival with an e-Visa, the portal asks for a passport valid for at least six months from the arrival date, an e-Visa printout, a travel itinerary, and, for tourists, hotel bookings or details of places to visit. Use the days before departure to line those up while you can still change the plan. Choose visa on arrival when you can handle airport formalities
Airport visa on arrival may fit if you have checked that the route is open to your passport and you accept doing the visa procedure at the airport. The Egyptian Embassy in Washington describes it as an airport procedure. Before you rely on it, the embassy says to confirm with the airline that a visa is not required in order to board. Passport holders who require pre-approval cannot get a visa on arrival. If the airline will not board you without a visa, the airport counter is not a backup you can count on for that flight.
The embassy also says the passport must be valid for more than six months at arrival. The Embassy states that Egyptian customs may deny entry. Reaching the airport is not itself a visa decision. What changed at Egyptian airports in September 2026
The Egyptian Embassy in Washington says that, effective 1 September 2026, all Egyptian airports moved from traditional visa-on-arrival stickers to an electronic QR code. If you use visa on arrival, that QR code is the format the airport uses. It replaces the sticker. It does not remove the embassy's other conditions: the airline boarding check, the bar on passport holders who require pre-approval, passport validity of more than six months at arrival, and the Embassy's warning that entry may still be denied on arrival.
That QR code is the airport format. It is not an e-Visa approval already obtained before departure. An approved Egypt e-Visa is the separate document from the government portal, issued electronically and sent as a download link.
