India eVisa Photo Requirements: Avoiding the Most Common Mistakes

Navigation: โ† India hub ยท India eVisa guide ยท Start on my-evisas.com

This is an implementation page: what the Government of India eVisa process says about uploading a photo, what happens if the image is not appropriate, and the regular visa photo parameters published on Indian Visa Online โ€” so you can check the live eVisa form before you submit. It is not a full substitute for eligibility, fees, or apply steps: use the India eVisa guide. For assisted filing, start on my-evisas.com. Stand: 12 August 2026.

Quick answer

  • The eVisa process includes apply online โ€” upload photo and passport page, then pay, receive an ETA, and present a printed ETA at immigration.
  • If a submitted document/image is not appropriate, you may get an email to re-upload (use the tab at the bottom of the page). Applicants should normally receive that mail within 24 hours.
  • Published regular visa photo rules (JPEG, 10โ€“300 KB, square, full face, light/white background) are on Indian Visa Online instructions. The eVisa form may show its own upload checks โ€” confirm on the live form.
  • Full eVisa rules: India eVisa guide. Help: my-evisas.com.

What the eVisa process says about photos

On the Government of India eVisa portal, the electronic process is:

  1. Apply online โ€” upload photo and passport page
  2. Pay the eVisa fee online
  3. Receive ETA by email
  4. Fly to India โ€” print the ETA and present it at immigration for stamping

Photo upload is step 1 of the eVisa process. Fee tables and category lists live on the main eVisa guide. Binding checks are whatever the live eVisa form accepts when you apply.

If the image is not appropriate โ€” re-upload

After you submit, the application is scrutinized. If any document/image is not appropriate, you may be advised on the email you gave to re-upload. Use the tab at the bottom of the page to re-upload. The portal states that applicants should normally receive this mail within 24 hours.

Do not ignore a re-upload request and assume the file will be granted anyway. Confirm ETA status GRANTED before travel (see the eVisa guide).

Regular visa photo parameters (confirm on the live form)

Indian Visa Online publishes photo requirements for the regular visa application (mission / paper path โ€” not labelled as the eVisa form):

  • Format: JPEG
  • Size: minimum 10 KB, maximum 300 KB
  • Shape: height and width must be equal (square)
  • Composition: full face, front view, eyes open; center the head; full head from top of hair to bottom of chin
  • Background: plain light-colored or white; no shadows on the face or background; without borders
  • Head size note on that page: head should measure 1 inch to 1-3/8 inches (25mm to 35mm)

Treat these as the published regular-visa parameters. When you apply for an eVisa, follow the on-screen upload rules on the live eVisa form โ€” they can differ. Do not freeze a third-party โ€œ10 KBโ€“1 MBโ€ figure as official eVisa truth.

Common mistakes to avoid

From the verified rules above (not from unofficial blogs):

  • File not JPEG, or size outside the limits the form you are using shows
  • Photo not square (height โ‰  width) when the form requires equal dimensions
  • Face not front view / eyes not open / head not centered
  • Busy, dark, or shadowed background instead of plain light/white
  • Borders around the image
  • Ignoring a re-upload email (normally within 24 hours)

FAQ

What photo do I need for an India eVisa?

You upload a photo as part of the online eVisa application (with the passport page). Exact file checks are on the live eVisa form. Regular-visa JPEG / 10โ€“300 KB / square rules are published on instruction.html โ€” confirm they match what your eVisa form shows.

What if my photo is rejected or I get a re-upload email?

If a document/image is not appropriate, the portal says you may be emailed to re-upload (bottom-of-page tab). That mail should normally arrive within 24 hours. Then confirm GRANTED before you fly.

Are eVisa photo rules the same as a regular embassy visa photo?

Not automatically. The JPEG / 10โ€“300 KB / square list above is from the regular visa instruction page. Use it as a checklist, then confirm on the live eVisa form.
