What the eVisa process says about photos

On the Government of India eVisa portal, the electronic process is:

1. Apply online — upload photo and passport page
2. Pay the eVisa fee online
3. Receive ETA by email
4. Fly to India — print the ETA and present it at immigration for stamping

Photo upload is step 1 of the eVisa process. Fee tables and category lists live on the main eVisa guide. Binding checks are whatever the live eVisa form accepts when you apply.

If the image is not appropriate — re-upload

After you submit, the application is scrutinized. If any document/image is not appropriate, you may be advised on the email you gave to re-upload. Use the tab at the bottom of the page to re-upload. The portal states that applicants should normally receive this mail within 24 hours.

Do not ignore a re-upload request and assume the file will be granted anyway. Confirm ETA status GRANTED before travel (see the eVisa guide).

Regular visa photo parameters (confirm on the live form)

Indian Visa Online publishes photo requirements for the regular visa application (mission / paper path — not labelled as the eVisa form):

• Format: JPEG
• Size: minimum 10 KB, maximum 300 KB
• Shape: height and width must be equal (square)
• Composition: full face, front view, eyes open; center the head; full head from top of hair to bottom of chin
• Background: plain light-colored or white; no shadows on the face or background; without borders
• Head size note on that page: head should measure 1 inch to 1-3/8 inches (25mm to 35mm)

Treat these as the published regular-visa parameters. When you apply for an eVisa, follow the on-screen upload rules on the live eVisa form — they can differ. Do not freeze a third-party “10 KB–1 MB” figure as official eVisa truth.

Common mistakes to avoid

From the verified rules above (not from unofficial blogs):

• File not JPEG, or size outside the limits the form you are using shows
• Photo not square (height ≠ width) when the form requires equal dimensions
• Face not front view / eyes not open / head not centered
• Busy, dark, or shadowed background instead of plain light/white
• Borders around the image
• Ignoring a re-upload email (normally within 24 hours)
