Work or study is not a Kenya eTA
The purpose of your stay determines the permission to look for. Kenya’s eTA addresses travel authorization. For employment, Kenya Immigration describes work permits and passes; for study at an institution that has accepted you, it describes the Student’s Pass. An approved eTA does not replace the permit or pass required for the activity you intend to undertake.
This distinction matters even when a traveler has already started an application. Kenya’s official eTA information lists holders of valid work permits and passes among those exempt from obtaining an eTA. A submitted application or offer of work or admission is not an issued, valid document. If you expect to travel before your permit or pass is issued, check the eTA rules that apply to your status at that time as well as the permission required for your work or studies. Neither a possible eTA requirement nor an eTA approval settles the separate permit or pass question.

Work and residence permits on eFNS
Kenya Immigration says permit and pass applications are submitted online through its eFNS system, with the required supporting documents uploaded for the relevant category. Start with the official permit and pass classes to identify which permission fits the actual work or residence plan and reach the current application channel. A job offer does not automatically identify the correct class. Class D, for example, is described for specific employment with a specific employer, subject to that class’s conditions. It is an example of one class, not a label for every worker. Match the offered activity and employer to the current Immigration requirements before treating any category as your route. An eTA does not by itself supply the permission needed to work.
Once a permit or pass has been processed and issued, Kenya Immigration instructs applicants to print it from eFNS and present it to an immigration office for endorsement. That later step is distinct from submitting an application. Student’s pass
A Student’s Pass is the route Kenya Immigration describes for a foreign national accepted or admitted to an academic or training institution in Kenya. Confirm that the institution and course fit the current requirements, then review the official Student’s Pass guidance and the supporting-document requirements with the institution. An acceptance letter helps establish the reason for the application; it is not itself authorization to study.
The distinction also matters if you hope to work alongside your course. A Student’s Pass addresses study; do not assume it also authorizes employment. If your plans include both study and work, ask the institution and Kenya Immigration which permissions your circumstances require before relying on a student pass for either activity. The Embassy in Washington does not process work permits
The Kenya Embassy in Washington, D.C. says it does not process applications for entry or work permits. It directs these applications to Kenya’s immigration authorities. The embassy also states that a non-Kenyan citizen needs the relevant entry or work permit before taking up paid or unpaid employment in Kenya.
If your employer gives you embassy contact details, that does not change who handles the permit application. Use Kenya Immigration’s permit information and eFNS route for the application, and clarify the appropriate class with the employer and the responsible authority. If you are only visiting Kenya
For a qualifying visit without work or study, check the Kenya eTA visitor guide against the current official rules. The Kenya Embassy describes an approved eTA before travel as the usual visitor requirement, while the government eTA information sets out exemptions. Your reason for travel and any valid Kenyan immigration document affect which rule applies.
For example, a visitor with no permit or pass should assess the ordinary visitor eTA route. Someone already holding a valid Kenyan work permit or pass should check the published exemption rather than assume an additional eTA is always necessary. Someone whose work or student application is still pending cannot rely on that holder exemption. These are different starting positions, so decide from the document you actually hold when you travel.
