For an ordinary visit to Kenya, a US passport holder will usually need an approved electronic travel authorisation (eTA) before starting the journey. The right next step depends on what you will do in Kenya and whether your route actually takes you through immigration. Short answer
- Visiting Kenya: Kenya calls its entry policy a “Visa Free Regime,” but visa-free does not mean travel without advance authorisation. The Kenya Embassy in Washington says visitors, including children and infants, need an approved eTA before travel unless a published exemption applies. - Changing planes without entering Kenya: A passenger who arrives and departs on the same aircraft or transfers to another aircraft without leaving the airport precincts falls within the published transit exemption. - Working or studying: An eTA is not a substitute for the relevant work permit or student pass. The work and student guide points to the appropriate official route.

Decision help — which Kenya entry path?
The purpose of the trip is the first question. For tourism or another ordinary visit, check the eTA route. A connection requires a second question: will you remain within the airport precincts throughout the transfer? A longer stay for work or study calls for its own permit or pass, even if you can also travel with an eTA.

Kenya replaced the former eVisa portal with its eTA system in January 2024. That change explains why older travel advice may use a different name. It does not remove the need to check an individual exemption or a purpose-specific permission. If you are uncertain which rule applies, start with the eTA guide and then follow the guide for the circumstance that changes your trip.
Yellow fever note
For a traveller flying directly from the United States to Kenya, the CDC says a yellow-fever vaccination certificate is not required for entry. That entry rule changes for travellers aged one year or older arriving from a country with a risk of yellow-fever transmission: vaccination is required. If your itinerary includes a stop or connection in a risk country, check how the current entry rule applies to the full route before departure; the direct-US answer alone may not settle it.
An entry requirement and a health recommendation answer different questions. The CDC's Kenya travel advice also recommends yellow-fever vaccination for many travellers aged nine months or older, with exceptions for travel limited to specified areas. Review that advice for your destinations even when a certificate is not required for your arrival route.

Do US citizens need a visa for Kenya?

For direct travel from the United States, the CDC says it is not an entry requirement. Arrival from a yellow-fever-risk country can make vaccination an entry requirement for travellers aged one year or older.
