Kenya’s Visa Free Regime does not mean a typical US visitor arrives with no paperwork. You still need an approved Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) before the journey starts, including infants and children, unless you match a published exemption — and the United States is not on the embassy nationality lists. Short answer
- For most US tourism and short visits, the path is a Kenya eTA, not the old eVisa site (replaced 5 January 2024) and not visa on arrival as a default.
- Fees, timing, and the government apply channel: Kenya eTA for US travelers.
- Kenya + Uganda + Rwanda in one trip is a separate East Africa tourist visa (official DIY). Work or study uses Kenya Immigration permits/passes. Airside transit can be exempt if you stay inside airport precincts.
- CDC: yellow-fever vaccine is not required for direct travel from the United States; it is required if you arrive from a country with yellow-fever risk (travelers ≥1 year).

Yellow fever note
CDC (updated 23 April 2025): for direct travel from the United States, yellow-fever vaccine is not a Kenya entry requirement. It is required for travelers ≥1 year old arriving from a country with risk of yellow-fever virus transmission.
CDC recommends vaccination for travelers ≥9 months to Kenya, except that it is generally not recommended for travel limited to Nairobi city, listed former North Eastern Province counties, or listed former Coast Province counties (except Taita-Taveta). Confirm the live CDC page before you fly.

Do US citizens need a visa for Kenya?

Is Kenya visa-free for Americans?
Kenya uses Visa Free Regime language and an eTA. “Visa-free” does not mean skip the authorization. Compare labels on eTA vs old eVisa.
Do I need a yellow fever vaccine for Kenya?
Not as an entry rule if you fly direct from the United States, per CDC. You do need it if you arrive from a yellow-fever-risk country (age ≥1). CDC still recommends the vaccine for most Kenya itineraries. See Yellow fever note above.
