New Zealand Visa for US Citizens: NZeTA Entry Guide & Articles

Navigation: โ† Blog ยท NZeTA guide ยท vs Visitor Visa ยท Traveller Declaration ยท Start NZeTA help

A stay under three months for a US passport holder does not start with a visitor-visa application. You request an NZeTA before travel; at the border, Immigration New Zealand may grant a visitor visa. Official wording that you can โ€œtravel to New Zealand without a visaโ€ means without applying for a visa first โ€” not that the trip is visa-free. Open the guide that matches the NZeTA request, a longer stay, or the free Traveller Declaration.

Stand: 25 September 2026.

Short answer

  • A valid passport from the United States of America (USA) (including USA nationals) sits on Immigration New Zealandโ€™s visa-waiver list.
  • For a stay under 3 months, you request an NZeTA before travel rather than applying for a visitor visa in advance. When you arrive with that NZeTA, Immigration New Zealand may grant a visitor visa at the border. That sequence is what โ€œtravel to New Zealand without a visaโ€ means in official language: travel without first applying for a visa.
  • A visit longer than 3 months needs an appropriate visa before arrival. Open the NZeTA vs Visitor Visa guide for that path.
  • Request an NZeTA on the official NZeTA website or app, or use optional private help for an eligible request at my-evisas.com. Immigration New Zealand decides the NZeTA and admission.
  • Everyone entering New Zealand also completes the free Traveller Declaration, including an NZeTA holder. A passenger who stays airside in transit at Auckland does not.

Situation Typical path More
Visit of up to 3 months at a time (for example, a 12-day trip landing in Auckland then continuing to Queenstown) Request an NZeTA before travel; at the border, Immigration New Zealand may grant a visitor visa. An NZeTA usually lasts 2 years and can be used for more than one trip while it is valid NZeTA guide
Visit longer than 3 months Apply for an appropriate visa and hold it before arrival NZeTA vs Visitor Visa
Connection only at Auckland International Airport, up to 24 hours, staying in the transit area the whole time An NZeTA can cover that airside transit; you cannot collect bags, and there is no hotel in the transit area. Needing a hotel means requesting the NZeTA as a visitor or getting a visitor visa before travel NZeTA guide
Entering New Zealand (not airside transit) Complete the free Traveller Declaration as well as any NZeTA or visa you hold Traveller Declaration

A visit of up to 3 months at a time can use an NZeTA that, for most travellers, is valid for 2 years and allows more than one trip while it is valid. A stay longer than 3 months needs an appropriate visa before arrival. An Auckland airside connection never leaves the transit area, so it follows the transit rule rather than a visit stay.

FAQ

Do US citizens need a visa for New Zealand?

For a stay under 3 months on a US passport, you do not start with a visitor-visa application. You request an NZeTA before travel; when you arrive with that NZeTA, Immigration New Zealand may grant a visitor visa at the border. That is the usual short-visit path for a US passport on the visa-waiver list. For eligibility, the official channel, and how to request an NZeTA, open the NZeTA guide. If the stay will be longer than 3 months, you need an appropriate visa before arrival โ€” see the NZeTA vs Visitor Visa guide.

Is New Zealand visa-free for US citizens?

US passport holders are visa-waiver travellers. They normally do not apply for a Visitor Visa before a short trip, but they do need an NZeTA before travel. If entry requirements are met, Immigration New Zealand grants a visitor visa on arrival. Use the NZeTA guide for the short-visit path, or the NZeTA vs Visitor Visa guide if the stay is longer than 3 months.

What is the New Zealand Traveller Declaration?

The New Zealand Traveller Declaration is free and separate from an NZeTA. Everyone entering New Zealand must complete one, including an NZeTA holder. A transit passenger who stays in the transit area at Auckland International Airport does not complete it, because that passenger cannot leave the transit area to enter New Zealand. Details are in the Traveller Declaration guide.

Transit through Auckland โ€” do US travelers need an NZeTA?

An NZeTA can cover transit through Auckland International Airport for up to 24 hours when you stay in the transit area the whole time. Auckland International Airport is the only New Zealand airport with a transit area. You cannot collect bags there, and there is no accommodation in the transit area. If you need a hotel while you wait, you must request the NZeTA as a visitor or get a visitor visa before travel. Full transit rules are in the NZeTA guide.
