When embassy or consular visas apply
U.S. citizens must have a visa to enter Egypt. For many short tourist trips, the United States is on the e-Visa eligible list — see the Egypt e-Visa guide.
Choose the embassy / consulate sticker path when your travel purpose or situation needs a visa issued at a mission before you fly, for example:
- Work or study travel that must be arranged in advance
- Visa issues, or arrival-visa concerns, where State.gov points travelers to an Egyptian embassy or consulate before departure
- Cases the tourist e-Visa portal does not cover — the Embassy states the e-Visa portal provides tourist visas only

Work, study, and special-purpose travel
Travel.State.Gov is clear: work or study visas must be obtained before traveling. That timing rule is separate from a last-minute tourist e-Visa application.
The Washington consular section lists visa categories such as Business / Entry / Visit alongside tourist visas, with American passport holder fee lines on the official page. Business/Entry/Visit fees at the Washington consulate are $67 (single entry) or $92 (multiple entry; the applicant has to provide a ticket reflecting multiple entry), cash, exact change for in-person service.
Special-purpose travel that is not ordinary tourism should be planned on the consular channel — not through the tourist e-Visa checkout.
Visa issues before you travel
State.gov guidance for U.S. citizens with visa issues, or arrival visa concerns, is to apply at an Egyptian embassy or consulate before traveling. That is an official consular route — not an online tourist e-Visa resubmission.
The Embassy also directs e-Visa inquiries to the help page on the e-Visa website, not through Egyptian consulates in the US. Having any visa — e-Visa or consular — does not guarantee entry. Egyptian immigration may still refuse admission.

Washington jurisdiction (except Official, Diplomatic, and Laissez Passer visas): Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and West Virginia. If you reside in another state, contact the consulate with your jurisdiction — the Embassy page links those offices.
Walk-ins (DC): Monday–Friday 9:30 AM–12:30 PM, except national and federal holidays. Appointments are not required during business hours for visa services.
