Egypt Visa for U.S. Green Card Holders: Which Rule Applies to Your Passport?

Short answer: A U.S. Green Card shows permanent residence in the United States, not U.S. citizenship. For an Egypt tourist e-Visa, start with the nationality on your travel passport and check Egypt's official eligibility list. An airport visa is a separate, conditional possibility under Egyptian Embassy guidance; a Green Card alone does not settle whether it is available to you. If your passport requires preapproval, or your route remains uncertain, ask the Egyptian consulate responsible for your U.S. state before travel. Information checked on 1 October 2026.

Why your passport comes before your Green Card

Your travel passport and your U.S. residence document answer different questions. A Green Card (Form I-551) establishes lawful permanent residence, according to the U.S. Department of State. It does not make its holder a U.S. citizen. Egypt's e-Visa portal, in turn, describes eligibility by the applicant's citizenship. That is why two Green Card holders carrying passports from different countries may have different Egypt visa routes.

Document or condition What it establishes Next check
Travel passport The nationality Egypt uses for its tourist e-Visa list and any nationality-specific restrictions Look up that nationality on the official e-Visa FAQ and the Embassy's visa guidance.
U.S. Green Card U.S. permanent residence; it can also be residence evidence in a consular application If considering the Embassy's airport guidance or a consular application, check its separate Green Card validity requirements.
Valid, previously used U.S. visa A condition described in a separate Egyptian tourism authority arrival route Check whether you actually hold a qualifying visa, then confirm that route for your passport before departure.

The choice is between an advance electronic application, advice or application through the appropriate Egyptian consulate, and a carefully confirmed airport route. The Egypt e-Visa versus visa-on-arrival guide compares the two travel timings in more detail.

If your nationality is on Egypt's e-Visa list

The official Egypt e-Visa FAQ says citizens of countries on its list may be issued an e-Visa upon application. The Embassy describes the electronic portal as a tourist visa channel and directs travelers to check the portal's eligible-country FAQ. Use the nationality of the passport you will present for travel, then check the portal's current conditions before applying.

For example, India appeared on the official list on 1 October 2026. A traveler with an Indian passport and a U.S. Green Card can therefore examine the tourist e-Visa route as an Indian national. The Green Card does not turn that application into a U.S.-citizen application, and a place on the list is an opportunity to apply, not a promise that a visa will be issued. The Egypt tourist e-Visa guide covers the advance electronic route.

Can a Green Card holder obtain a visa at the airport?

Possibly, but the answer needs a check specific to your passport and documents. Under โ€œVisa On Arrival (Emergency Visas),โ€ the Egyptian Embassy in Washington says both the passport and U.S. Green Card must be valid for more than six months. It also tells travelers to confirm with their airline that they can board without a visa. The Embassy expressly excludes passports on its preapproval list from airport visa issuance.

There is also a distinct description from Egypt's tourism authorities: an arrival facilitation for travelers holding a valid and previously used U.S. visa, or a qualifying visa from another listed country. The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities describes that condition, and the tourism authority's current information page repeats the valid-and-used-visa description. Its wording does not identify a Green Card as that visa. Holding a Green Card and holding a previously used U.S. visa are different document situations; do not substitute one for the other when asking about this route.

If you are considering airport issuance, give the Egyptian consulate your passport nationality, Green Card expiry date, and any visa on which you intend to rely. Ask which airport rule applies to that exact combination, then confirm boarding requirements with your airline before departure. An advance visa is the more dependable plan when that answer is unclear.

When the Egyptian consulate is the safer route

The Embassy's visa requirements identify passports from Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Iran, Israel, Mali, Niger, Palestine, Sudan and Syria, as well as travel documents, as requiring preapproval. It says holders on that list cannot obtain an airport visa. It separately states that Bangladeshi nationals need a visa before entry. A U.S. Green Card does not remove those stated restrictions. If your travel document falls into one of these categories, contact the Egyptian consulate before arranging travel on an airport-visa assumption.

For a non-American tourist-visa application at the Washington consulate, the Embassy lists two front-and-back copies of a Green Card valid for more than six months, or specified U.S. work or student visa evidence. In that setting the Green Card helps document U.S. residence; it does not change the passport nationality used to assess the application. The Washington office accepts applications only from states it serves, so identify the Egyptian consulate responsible for your state before following its document instructions. See the Egyptian consular visa guide for the consular route.

What to confirm before flying

First, check your passport nationality against the live e-Visa FAQ and the Embassy's preapproval guidance. If eligible for the tourist e-Visa and its portal conditions, applying before travel gives you an advance decision. If you need consular guidance, use the office serving your U.S. state.

If you plan to ask for a visa at an Egyptian airport, check the Embassy's more-than-six-month validity conditions for both your passport and Green Card. Confirm the exact airport basis with Egyptian officials and ask your airline whether it will board you without an advance visa. These are two separate decisions: the airline checks documents before departure, while Egyptian authorities decide visa issuance and entry. The Embassy warns that entry can be denied at the airport even when a traveler reaches Egypt.

FAQ

Does a U.S. Green Card make me eligible as a U.S. citizen?

No. It proves U.S. permanent residence, not citizenship. Check Egypt's rules for the nationality in your travel passport.

Can I apply for an Egypt e-Visa with an Indian passport and a U.S. Green Card?

India was on Egypt's official tourist e-Visa nationality list as of 1 October 2026. Check the current list and portal conditions, then apply as an Indian passport holder if you meet them. The Green Card is not what places India on the list.

Is a Green Card the same as a valid and used U.S. visa for Egypt's airport rule?

No. The tourism authority describes a valid previously used visa route; a Green Card documents permanent residence. The Embassy separately mentions Green Cards in its emergency airport guidance. Confirm which, if either, fits your passport and documents before relying on airport issuance.

Can a preapproval-list passport holder get an airport visa with a Green Card?

The Egyptian Embassy says passport holders on its preapproval list cannot acquire a visa on arrival. Ask the competent consulate about the required advance process.

What if my Green Card will expire soon?

Check the actual expiry date against the Embassy's more-than-six-month condition for its airport guidance and, if applying through the Washington consulate, its Green Card copy requirement. If it does not meet the relevant condition, do not assume the Green Card supports that route. Ask the appropriate Egyptian consulate about your available advance option.

Choosing where to apply

If your passport nationality is on the official tourist e-Visa list and you meet the portal's conditions, you can apply directly through Egypt's e-Visa portal. If your passport needs preapproval, or you cannot confirm electronic or airport eligibility, contact the Egyptian consulate serving your U.S. state. Consider an airport visa only after Egyptian officials and your airline confirm the exact passport and document combination.

For an eligible electronic tourist application, my-evisas.com offers optional filing assistance. That assistance concerns the electronic application. Airport visas and consular applications are handled through the relevant Egyptian authorities. Egyptian authorities decide visa issuance and admission; your airline makes its own boarding decision.
