ETIAS vs Schengen Visa: What US Travelers Need for Short Stays

Short answer: Typical US tourism and short business visits are visa-exempt. When ETIAS is operating you apply once for the 30 European countries that require it โ€” not a separate authorisation for each country. A Schengen visa is a different path: longer stay, work, study, or if you are not visa-exempt. ETIAS is not a visa. As of 19 August 2026 the official system is not collecting applications. Official channel, fees, and timing: ETIAS guide. Stand: 19 August 2026.

ETIAS for visa-exempt short stays

United States nationality is on the official visa-exempt list. For a typical US tourist or short business trip to the 30 European countries that require ETIAS, the path once applications are collected is an ETIAS travel authorisation โ€” not a sticker visa.

That authorisation is for short-term stays. It does not give the right to work, or to study long-term. A short study programme, or travel only to attend a business conference or a meeting, can use ETIAS when the system is operating.

Fees, official site, and whether you can apply yet: ETIAS guide. When filing opens, my-evisas.com can assist with the electronic application.

Schengen visa (sticker)

If you need a visa, use the consulate path. Official ETIAS pages say travellers with a valid visa do not need ETIAS. Holders of a uniform visa or a national long-stay visa are listed among those who do not need ETIAS.

Work needs a work visa. Study for more than 90 days needs a student visa. Official FAQ: contact the consulate of the country you intend to work or study in. Lodge that application yourself with the relevant consulate; confirm fees, appointments, and documents on that consulateโ€™s pages before you travel.

One authorisation, not one per country

You do not apply for a new ETIAS every time you fly, and you do not get a separate ETIAS for France and another for the Netherlands. Both are among the 30 European countries that require visa-exempt travellers to hold ETIAS.

Official FAQ: the authorisation is valid for three years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first, and you may leave and return within the stay limits. You name a first intended country when you apply; once the authorisation is issued you can change plans and travel to any of those 30 countries.

Which path fits your trip?

Situation Typical path
US tourism or short meetings across several of the 30 countries ETIAS when it is collecting applications
Travel only to attend a business conference or a meeting ETIAS when live โ€” not a work visa
Work in a country requiring ETIAS Work visa at the consulate
Study more than 90 days Student visa at the consulate
You already hold a valid visa, a uniform visa, or a national long-stay visa No ETIAS for that visa

FAQ

Do I need ETIAS and a Schengen visa for the same trip?

Usually no. Visa-exempt short stay โ†’ ETIAS (when the system is collecting applications). If you hold a valid visa โ€” including a uniform visa or a national long-stay visa โ€” you do not need ETIAS. Work and long study are visa paths, not ETIAS.

Do France and the Netherlands each need a separate ETIAS?

No. France and the Netherlands are both on the 30-country list. One authorisation covers that list. After it is issued you can change plans and travel to any of those 30 countries.

Is ETIAS a visa?

No. Official FAQ: it is not equivalent to a residence permit or a visa. It only covers short-term stay in the countries that require it.

Can my-evisas.com file a Schengen sticker visa?
