ETIAS for US Citizens: Do Americans Need It Now?

Navigation: โ† Blog ยท ETIAS guide ยท ETIAS vs Schengen visa ยท EES vs ETIAS ยท my-evisas.com

You do not apply for ETIAS today. The system is not in operation and no applications are collected; the start date will be announced several months in advance. Typical US short stays will need ETIAS once it launches, for 30 European countries. Ireland is not on that list. Start with the ETIAS guide for the official site, fees, and what happens when applications open.

Stand: 19 August 2026.

Short answer

  • ETIAS is not in operation and no applications are collected.
  • The EU will announce the start date several months in advance.
  • US nationals are on the visa-exempt list that will need ETIAS for those 30 countries once it starts.
  • Ireland is not on that 30-country list.
  • Border EES registration is already in use on EES countries โ€” it is not an ETIAS application.
