ETIAS for US Citizens: Do Americans Need It Now?
If you are a US citizen planning a European trip, you cannot apply for ETIAS yet. As of 23 September 2026, the system is not operating and is collecting no applications. The useful question for a trip now is which entry rules apply to your destination; for a later trip, it is whether ETIAS has begun by your travel date.

No ETIAS application is needed or available today. US nationals are among the visa-exempt travellers who will need ETIAS for visits to the 30 European countries covered by the system once it operates. That future requirement does not turn ETIAS into a visa or change the fact that travel rules must be checked for the country and purpose of your trip now.

When does ETIAS start?
The EU has not announced a specific start date. It says it will announce that date several months before launch. A projected date is therefore a poor basis for deciding whether to file anything for a particular trip.
Check the official ETIAS status as your plans develop. The ETIAS guide explains what the future authorisation is and where to find application information when the system opens. Until then, there is no ETIAS application to submit.

Do US citizens need a visa for Europe right now?
There is no single visa answer for every European destination and every purpose of travel. US nationals are listed as visa-exempt travellers for the future ETIAS requirement, but that does not settle the rules for a particular trip. When does ETIAS start?

Does Ireland require ETIAS?
Ireland is outside the 30-country ETIAS list. If Ireland is your destination, check its own entry rules rather than treating ETIAS as the Irish entry route. The rule for Irish nationals travelling on Irish documents is also distinct: they do not need ETIAS.
Is EES something I apply for?
