EES vs ETIAS: Border Registration vs Travel Authorisation
Short answer: EES registers non-EU short-stay travellers at the external border (facial image and fingerprints). Official leaflet: progressive launch 12 October 2025, fully operational since 10 April 2026. You do not apply for EES before you fly. ETIAS is a separate pre-travel authorisation for visa-free visitors; as of 19 August 2026 it is not collecting applications. Cyprus and Ireland still stamp passports instead of EES. What EES does at the border
EES is an automated system that registers non-EU nationals on a short stay each time they cross the external border of one of the 29 European countries using it. That includes visa-free visitors and travellers who need a short-stay visa.
At the border, officers record passport details, take a facial image and fingerprints, and log entry and exit dates and locations. In countries using EES, that digital file replaces passport stamps.
Some crossings offer automated or self-service equipment. You may also pre-register data in the official Travel to Europe app within 72 hours before entry — that can speed up the check; it is not an EES application you submit from home.
What ETIAS is (and is not open yet)
ETIAS is a travel authorisation visa-free travellers will need before a short stay in the 30 European countries that require it (the Schengen area and Cyprus). As of 19 August 2026, official pages say the system is not in operation and no applications are collected. The EU will announce the start date several months before launch.
A US citizen going to any of those 30 countries for a typical short stay will need that authorisation when the system is operating. Carriers will check it before departure. On arrival at an external EU border, personal data is still recorded in EES.

Do I apply for EES?
No. Official guidance: you do not apply for EES in advance. Registration happens at the border. An “apply for EES” form is not how this system works.

Cyprus, Ireland, and country lists
EES covers 29 European countries listed on the official leaflet (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland). Cyprus and Ireland still stamp passports by hand.
ETIAS covers 30 countries: the Schengen area plus Cyprus. Ireland is not in that 30-country set.

FAQ
How do I apply for EES?
You don’t. EES registration is at the external border. There is no EES form to submit before you travel.
Is EES the same as ETIAS?
No. EES is border registration of entries and exits. ETIAS is a pre-travel authorisation for visa-free visitors (not collecting applications as of 19 August 2026).
Do US travelers get registered in EES now?
For a typical US short stay, yes: US passport holders are non-EU visa-free travellers, so EES applies when you cross an EES external border. ETIAS is additional once that system is operating.
Does Ireland use EES?
No. Ireland (and Cyprus) stamp passports instead of EES. Ireland is also outside the ETIAS 30-country set.
