Short answer: ETIAS is the EU travel authorisation for visa-exempt visitors to 30 European countries. As of 19 August 2026 the official site says it is not in operation and no applications are collected. The EU will announce the start date several months before launch. What is ETIAS?
ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) is a travel authorisation for visa-exempt travellers entering 30 European countries. It is linked to your passport. It is not a visa or a residence permit, and it does not let you work or study long-term.
With a valid authorisation you can usually stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period. It does not guarantee entry: border guards still check that you meet the entry conditions. If you get a new passport, you need a new ETIAS.

The official ETIAS site is on the EU’s travel-europe.europa.eu domain: https://travel-europe.europa.eu/etias. When applications are collected, you apply on that website or the official ETIAS mobile app.
Can I apply now?
No. The official site states that ETIAS is currently not in operation and that no applications for travel authorisations are collected. The EU will give several months’ notice before the start date. Until then, typical US visitors continue under today’s visa-exempt short-stay rules — and should still expect EES border registration on EES countries.
Who needs ETIAS (US citizens)
The official “who should apply” list includes the United States. For a typical US tourism or short business trip to the 30 countries, ETIAS is the path once the system is collecting applications.
You do not use ETIAS instead of a visa if you need to work or study more than 90 days — those trips need the relevant visa. Travellers who already hold a valid visa do not need ETIAS.
Irish nationals travelling on an Irish document do not need ETIAS. Ireland is not one of the 30 countries on the official list — see the ETIAS hub.
Fees, validity, and processing
When applications are collected on the official site:
- Fee: EUR 20. Applicants under 18 or over 70 are exempt (family-member status can also be exempt). Confirm the live checkout; official pages do not publish a USD amount.
- Validity: three years, or until the passport used in the application expires — whichever comes first.
- Stay: normally up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Time in Cyprus is calculated separately.
- Processing: most applications within minutes; some decisions within four days; extra documents can add up to 14 days, an interview up to 30 days. Apply well before travel once the system is open.
Passport: valid for three months after your intended departure from the countries requiring ETIAS, or you can be refused entry (exceptions exist).
How to apply — overview
Once the EU is collecting applications:
- Use the official ETIAS website or official app.
- Have your travel document and a payment card.
- Pay EUR 20 unless you are exempt.
- Keep the application number from the confirmation email.
- Check that name and passport number match before you travel.
Someone else (a family member, friend, or a commercial intermediary such as a travel agency) may apply on your behalf. Minors’ applications must be submitted by a person with parental authority or legal guardianship.
ETIAS vs ESTA, UK ETA, and a Schengen visa
EU pages describe ETIAS as a travel authorisation similar in type to programmes such as the US ESTA and the UK ETA. It is not ESTA, and it is not a UK ETA.
A Schengen visa is a different document. Typical US short stays are visa-exempt; a sticker visa is for longer stays, work, study, or if you are not visa-exempt. If an application is refused
If an application is refused, the email includes the reasons, how to appeal, the competent authority, and the time limit. The appeal is processed by the authorities of the country that refused the application. You may apply again. None of this is in motion while applications are not being collected.
