New Zealand Transit for US Travelers: NZeTA, Auckland 24 Hours, and Transit Visa DIY

Short answer: For many travellers, an NZeTA can allow transit through Auckland International Airport for up to 24 hours while you stay in the transit area. You are a transit passenger if you pass through Auckland on the way to another country, remain in the transit area (or on the aircraft / in police custody) the whole time, and stay less than 24 hours. You will usually need a Transit Visa or an NZeTA that lets you transit โ€” you cannot enter New Zealand as a visitor on that transit stay. Other New Zealand airports have no transit area. When the NZeTA path is not enough, apply for a Transit Visa on Immigration New Zealand only โ€” my-evisas.com does not sell Transit Visa filing. Stand: 29 July 2026.

What counts as a transit passenger

Per Immigration New Zealand:

  • Passing through Auckland International Airport to another country
  • Staying in the transit area the whole time (or on the plane you arrived on, or in New Zealand Police custody)
  • Staying less than 24 hours

There is no accommodation in the transit area. If you need a hotel or to leave the transit area, you are not on a pure transit stay โ€” you need authorisation that lets you enter New Zealand (for example an NZeTA requested as a visitor, or a Visitor Visa โ€” confirm on INZ).

Not Auckland: you are not a transit passenger at other New Zealand airports (no transit area). You will usually need a Visitor Visa or an NZeTA that lets you enter.

When an NZeTA covers transit

INZโ€™s NZeTA product page states an NZeTA can let eligible people transit through Auckland International Airport for up to 24 hours. You must stay in the transit area at all times and cannot leave to collect bags or stay at a hotel.

Eligibility depends on passport, journey (including to/from Australia in some cases), and character rules โ€” use INZโ€™s checker and the NZeTA guide. Soft help for the electronic NZeTA path: https://my-evisas.com/visas/new-zealand.

Transit Visa highlights from INZ (confirm live fees/times before you apply):

  • Stay in Auckland transit area up to 24 hours
  • You cannot visit New Zealand on a Transit Visa
  • You cannot use it at a non-Auckland airport

NZTD and transit

INZ notes that as a transit passenger at Auckland International Airport you do not have to complete a New Zealand Traveller Declaration (NZTD), because you cannot leave the transit area to visit New Zealand. If you will enter New Zealand, NZTD rules apply separately โ€” see NZ Traveller Declaration.

FAQ

Can I transit New Zealand on an NZeTA?

Often yes if you qualify โ€” INZ lists transit through Auckland for up to 24 hours among what an NZeTA can allow. Confirm eligibility on INZ.

How long can I stay in the Auckland transit area?

Up to 24 hours, and you must remain in the transit area.

Do I need a Transit Visa as a US passport holder?

Many US travellers use the NZeTA route when eligible. If that path does not cover your case, use INZโ€™s Transit Visa DIY page. This site does not lodge Transit Visas.

Do transit passengers file an NZTD?

Not while remaining a transit passenger at Auckland (INZ). Entering New Zealand is different.

Can I leave the transit area to collect bags?

No for transit passengers โ€” bags should be through-checked; otherwise use the International Transit Desk as INZ describes.
