Yes — for a short visit, a US passport holder usually needs an ETA rather than a visa. Nationality and the reason for the trip still decide what is required.

What an ETA allows
With an ETA you can come to the UK for up to 6 months for tourism, visiting family and friends, a business trip, or short-term study.
You cannot stay longer than 6 months on an ETA. You also cannot do paid or unpaid work for a UK company or as a self-employed person, unless you are doing a permitted paid engagement or event, or work on the Creative Worker visa concession.
So a week of sightseeing or a short family visit fits; ordinary UK work or a longer stay does not. If the trip falls outside those limits, use the visitor visa guide instead.

Apply online on GOV.UK or in the UK ETA app. Another website or app cannot get a faster decision.
Have the passport you will travel with ready — the ETA is linked to that passport. You usually get a decision by email within a day, and it can take up to 3 working days. Wait for the confirmation email before you travel.
The fee is stated on the official page. You cannot get a refund after you apply.
How long it lasts
An ETA lasts for 2 years or until the passport expires, whichever is sooner. You can travel to the UK as many times as you want while it is valid.
Because it is linked to the passport you applied with, a new passport means a new ETA. Keep the confirmation email with your travel documents so you can show you are cleared to fly when you need it.
When a visa is the other path
Use a Standard Visitor visa when the ETA limits do not fit — for example a stay longer than 6 months, ordinary UK work, or another purpose that an ETA does not cover. GOV.UK also notes that if you have a criminal record or were previously refused entry into the UK, you may want a Standard Visitor visa instead of an ETA.
If an ETA application is rejected, or details need to change, you apply again. Open the visitor visa guide when that path matches the trip, or return to the official ETA request when you need to apply again.
