Do US citizens need a UK ETA?

What if the ETA is rejected or refused?
If the application is rejected, or the details need to change, you are told the reason and you apply again. If it is refused, you cannot appeal. A refusal is not a refusal of permission to enter, but if you still want to come to the UK you apply for a visa. There is no refund after you apply. An ETA does not guarantee entry.
When is a visitor visa required?
If a Standard Visitor visa is required, apply online before travel. A previous refusal of entry or a criminal record may still make that visa the request to consider, even when an ETA would otherwise be the usual path.
