UK Standard Visitor Visa for US Travelers: When You Need It Instead of an ETA
Navigation: ← UK hub · UK ETA guide · ETA refused? · Start ETA application
For most short trips from the United States, the usual path is a UK ETA — not a Standard Visitor visa. GOV.UK states that people from the USA usually need an ETA rather than a visa, and US nationals are listed for ETA travel on or after 8 January 2025. This page explains when the Standard Visitor visa is the right track, what it costs, and how it differs from ETA — without a form-by-form walkthrough.
Important: my-evisas.com helps with the UK ETA (electronic travel authorisation). We do not sell or file Standard Visitor visas, sticker visas, or consulate appointments. Visitor applications go through official DIY on gov.uk/standard-visitor.
Quick answer
- Typical US short stay (tourism / visits): usually an ETA, not a visitor visa (GOV.UK).
- Standard Visitor visa: often after an ETA refusal (no appeal — apply for a visa if you still want to seek permission), or when your nationality/purpose requires a visa, or in edge cases such as a prior entry refusal or criminal record where GOV.UK says you may want a visitor visa even if you do not otherwise need one.
- Visitor fee: £135 for up to 6 months; earliest apply 3 months before travel (GOV.UK).
- ETA fee (contrast): £20 online or via the UK ETA app (GOV.UK) — full ETA rules in our UK ETA guide.

ETA or Standard Visitor visa?
| Situation | Typical path | More |
|---|---|---|
| US passport · short tourism/visit · usual case | ETA | UK ETA guide · my-evisas.com |
| ETA refused | Apply for a visa (no appeal against the ETA refusal) | ETA refused · Standard Visitor |
| Prior UK entry refusal / criminal record (optional path) | You may want a Standard Visitor visa even if you do not need one | GOV.UK Standard Visitor |
| Work, long study, settlement | Other visa category — not “Visitor as a workaround” | GOV.UK check UK visa |
An ETA is an electronic travel authorisation for eligible short trips (valid for 2 years or until the passport expires, whichever is sooner; stays up to 6 months while it is valid). A Standard Visitor visa is a visa application with a different fee and process — not the same product as an ETA.
When do US travelers need a Standard Visitor visa?
After an ETA refusal
According to the UK Home Office ETA factsheet, if an ETA application is refused, there is no appeal. If the person still wishes to seek permission to come to the UK, they need to apply for a visa. For many leisure/family visits that path is the Standard Visitor route on GOV.UK. Step-by-step refusal context: UK ETA refused — what next?.
Edge cases GOV.UK flags
GOV.UK — Standard Visitor notes that if you have previously been refused entry to the UK or have a criminal record, you may want to apply for a Standard Visitor visa even if you do not need one. That is optional guidance, not a blanket rule for every US traveler.
When nationality or purpose requires a visa
Depending on nationality, travelers either apply for a Standard Visitor visa or an ETA (GOV.UK). US nationals usually fall on the ETA side for ordinary short visits — confirm your case on the official pages before you book.
What a Standard Visitor can and cannot do
Per GOV.UK — Standard Visitor, you can visit for tourism, business, study (courses up to 6 months) and other permitted activities, and you can usually stay up to 6 months.
Treat paid work for a UK company, settling via frequent visits, or other long-stay purposes as out of scope for this page — check the official Visitor rules and check UK visa for the correct category. my-evisas.com does not offer sticker or consulate filing for those routes.
