Who can use an eVisa
Vietnam’s electronic visa is applied for citizens of all countries and territories. That includes US passport holders planning a trip that needs a visa.
US passport holders are not covered by Vietnam’s current 45-day unilateral/tourism visa-exemption schemes. Unless another exemption fits your itinerary, plan on the electronic visa.
How long it lasts
The duration of Vietnam’s electronic visa was lengthened from a maximum of 30 days with single entry to a maximum of 90 days with single or multiple entry. The grant you receive shows the dates and entry type that apply to your request—use those dates, not a general rule of thumb.
The official application
The Vietnam Electronic Visa Portal operates on evisa.gov.vn and thithucdientu.gov.vn. Submit the application and check the result at those addresses. Embassy pages can describe the policy; the request itself is filed on that portal.

Phu Quoc is a different rule
Foreign passports may enter and leave Phu Quoc island without a visa for a stay of no longer than 30 days. The same exemption applies when holders of foreign passports transit through another international border gate of Viet Nam before entering Phu Quoc.
That rule covers entry into and exit from the island for the stay it describes. It is not a mainland visa waiver for the rest of Vietnam.
When another guide fits
Citizens of all countries and territories can use the electronic visa, and a typical US trip still uses that visa. Open another guide only when the decision changes.
