Vietnam Visa Requirements for US Citizens: eVisa, Phu Quoc & Pre-Arrival

Travel.State.Gov states that a visa is required for Vietnam and that you must apply before you travel. An exception is allowed for stays of 30 days or less on the island of Phu Quoc only. For most U.S. trips that leave Phu Quoc or visit the mainland, the practical default is a Vietnam eVisa arranged before departure. Non-Vietnamese passport holders entering by air must also fill a pre-arrival declaration no earlier than 3 days prior to arrival — that form is not a visa. Pitfalls:
- Pre-arrival is not a visa — you still need an eVisa (or other visa path) unless you truly fit an exception.
- Phu Quoc exception is island-only — leaving the island / visiting mainland usually means a visa is still required.

Phu Quoc island note (short)
Travel.State.Gov allows an exception for stays of 30 days or less on the island of Phu Quoc only. If your trip is Phu Quoc-only and within that window, confirm the current exemption conditions before you fly. If you plan to visit Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Da Nang, or any mainland destination — or you are unsure — treat the eVisa path as the default and read the eVisa guide. Do US citizens need a visa for Vietnam?

What about Phu Quoc?
