Two ways to apply
On its visa application process page, the Embassy of Vietnam in the United States sets out two routes. The first is a standard visa filed at the embassy, either in person or by mail. The second is an electronic visa requested through the Immigration Department of Viet Nam’s Ministry of Public Security. The Vietnam Electronic Visa Portal operates on evisa.gov.vn and thithucdientu.gov.vn.
Embassy processing
When the applicant has not received a letter of approval, the embassy states that processing takes five working days after submission of a complete application with all required documentation and fee. That clock belongs to the embassy’s standard-visa lane. It does not start until the embassy treats the package as complete.
On the same page, the embassy states that US citizens can be granted multiple visas with a length of up to one year. That one-year figure is an embassy grant for the standard visa path.
The embassy also reserves the right to request further information and documentation, and to reject any visa application without explanation. Extra questions or a refusal may arrive with little narrative attached. The practical next step is to wait for the message the embassy actually sends—approval, a request for more material, or a refusal—and to follow what that message says, rather than assuming a fixed outcome from the five-working-day line alone.
When an eVisa still fits
The electronic visa can last up to 90 days, with single or multiple entry. The embassy’s grant of up to one year belongs to the standard visa, so a shorter US tourist trip can use the electronic visa. A traveler using the eVisa route should follow the Vietnam eVisa guide instead.
