For a short visit to Australia on a US passport, start by checking whether the Electronic Travel Authority (ETA, subclass 601) fits your trip. The guides below help you check eligibility, plan an application and consider a visitor visa when the ETA does not fit.
As of 23 September 2026.
Short answer
- US passports are on Australia's ETA-eligible passport list, but the proposed visit and the other ETA conditions still matter. Check the ETA guide before applying.
- An ETA permits stays of up to three months on each entry during a 12-month period, subject to the grant and its conditions. For a longer tourist visit, check the Visitor visa (subclass 600).
- If the ETA fits, Home Affairs directs applicants to the Australian ETA app. You can use the app directly or review optional ETA application assistance.

Which Australia visitor path fits your trip?
Match your passport, purpose and intended stay to the visa conditions before choosing an application route. For a short holiday on a US passport, the ETA is the starting point: it allows visits of up to three months at a time if you meet its conditions. A passport on the eligible list alone does not settle the outcome of an individual application.
If you plan a longer tourist trip or your circumstances do not fit the ETA, examine the Visitor visa (subclass 600) Tourist stream. Home Affairs says that stream can allow a stay of up to 12 months for tourism, a cruise or visiting family and friends. For the overseas Tourist stream, you must be outside Australia when you apply and when Home Affairs decides. Check the conditions for the ETA or the Visitor 600 Tourist stream against your actual trip.
FAQ
Do US citizens need a visa or ETA for Australia?
For a short visit on a US passport, check eligibility for the ETA (subclass 601). Your passport is on the eligible list, while the other conditions and the permission granted determine whether it fits your trip.
Can a US passport holder use eVisitor 651?
The eVisitor (subclass 651) has a different eligible-passport list, which does not include the United States. The ETA (subclass 601) is the relevant starting point for an eligible US passport holder.
Is an Australia tourist visa the same as an ETA?
No. The ETA is subclass 601; the Visitor visa Tourist stream is part of subclass 600. The right path depends on your purpose, proposed length of stay and the conditions of each visa. Read the Visitor 600 guide if the ETA does not fit.
When should I read about Visitor 600?
Read it when you are considering a longer tourist visit or another circumstance outside the ETA route. The overseas Tourist stream has its own conditions, including being outside Australia when you apply and when Home Affairs decides.
