India eVisa for US Citizens: What's Different

Longer Stays on the Tourist eVisa 

US citizens are one of a small group of nationalities, alongside the UK, Canada and Japan, who can stay in India for up to 180 days on a single visit using a Tourist eVisa. 

Most other nationalities are limited to 90 days per visit. This applies to the 1 year and 5 years Tourist eVisa validity options. 

The validity period controls how long the visa itself can be used to enter India; the 180 day figure is how long you can stay once you arrive.

If you take more than one trip to India within the same calendar year, your combined time in the country across all visits is still capped at 180 days in total. For most US travellers taking a single trip, this will not make a practical difference, but it matters if you are planning multiple visits in one year.

Business, Medical and Conference eVisas Use the Same Rules for Everyone 

The 180 day benefit above applies only to the Tourist eVisa. 

The Business eVisa already allows a 180 day stay per visit for all eligible nationalities, not only US citizens, so there is no separate US advantage there. Medical and Conference eVisas follow the same stay limits and requirements regardless of your passport.
